Cook Islands, Rarotonga

You can swim with the turtles- go with a guide.

Cook Islands Tourism has received reports of several visitors needing to be rescued in the Avaavaroa passage because they attempted to swim with turtles without a certified guide.

To prevent this from happening again, Cook Islands Tourism has installed informational signs to educate visitors and the general public about the importance of safety when swimming with turtles at Avaavaroa and Rutaki passages.

Tourism hopes that these signs will help reinforce the importance of being safe and the message that saving a few dollars by going without a guide is simply not worth the risk.
