Pre TSA is a program designed to ensure that passengers are "Pre-screened" for security risks before they enter the airport and board their flights. The process needs to be initiated months in advance, including application, currently $78 fee, and background check. Your Pre status is good for five years. Pre members airport security still includes checking identification and verifying travel documents at the ticket counter, as well as checking luggage for prohibited items. However, lines can be much shorter and you will no longer be removing your shoes.

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Global Entry members are able to bypass long lines at customs and immigration and use automated kiosks to clear customs and immigration. Membership lasts five years. In order to qualify for Global Entry, travelers must undergo a background check and interview process at an airport, and a $100 fee. Membership in Global includes Pre membership as well.

It is generally a good idea to have at least one of these programs, especially if you travel frequently. Pre TSA helps to streamline the airport security process and make it easier to board your domestic flights. While Global Entry can save you time and hassle when entering the United States.
